National Recovery Month is an observance held every September to educate Americans that substance use treatment and mental health services can enable those who are struggling to live a healthy and rewarding life. Help FPHSA spread the word that recovery IS possible! Visit our website at www.fphsa.org for information regarding our behavioral health services.

Narcan Made Available to St. Tammany Fire District #2

Rebecca Soley 388

Florida Parishes Human Services Authority (FPHSA) provided St. Tammany Fire District #2 with NARCAN nasal spray at no cost as part of the effort to reduce overdose deaths in our region. FPHSA is spreading awareness and making Narcan easily accessible to the public and our local law enforcement agencies and emergency responders to combat opioid related deaths.

FPHSA launched an overdose prevention campaign in April that includes working to increase the availability of this life-saving medication as well as increases access to treatment for substance use disorders with the five Florida Parishes. This initiative is in response to the continued rise of opioid-related overdoses and the increase in accidental exposure to law enforcement. The doses are in the form of a nasal spray and can be administered in known or suspected opioid overdose cases or in the event that an individual is accidentally exposed. Narcan can’t be used to get high and it is safe to use on anyone because it’s only action on the body is to temporarily reverse the effect of an Opioid overdose, stabilizing the individual until EMS can arrive.

Funding for this campaign was made available as part of the State Targeted Response to the Opioid Epidemic. Narcan kits are now available at all FPHSA outpatient clinics at no cost to both clients and their family members who do not have insurance. Please speak to one of FPHSA’s nurses or counselors to request your Narcan kit or call Heather Gernold or one of “STR Peer Support Specialist” at 985-543-4730.
